Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent engaged in a heated
exchange with Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren during a session on Capitol
Hill, attributing some of the blame to her for the current affordability crisis
facing millions of American families.
During a discussion about the country's economic situation,
inflation, and the loss of purchasing power, Bessent defended former President
Donald Trump and rejected criticism that, he said, attempts to place sole
responsibility for the recent economic difficulties on his administration.
Instead, he indicated that policies implemented by President Joe Biden's
administration and supported by key figures in the Democratic Party, including
Warren, have contributed to the decline in citizens' real income.
Addressing the senator directly, the official stated that,
beyond technical differences or “nuances,” the fundamental debate revolves
around the impact of those economic decisions. “Senator, there may be nuances,
but when President Trump speaks of the affordability crisis, he is referring to
what the media acknowledges: that it was created by this administration. It was
you and President Biden who weakened the purchasing power of the American
people,” he said.
Bessent insisted that the rising cost of basic goods,
housing, and services has hit the middle and working classes hard, and
concluded by pointing out that Warren was one of the central figures in
promoting the policies that, in his view, led to this situation. “There is an
affordability crisis, and you were at the heart of those decisions,” he added.
