With just over a week remaining before the deadline to
secure funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), top Democratic
leaders in Congress have increased the pressure in budget negotiations.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority
Leader Chuck Schumer presented a list of ten conditions that, they say, must be
met to guarantee continued funding for the agency beyond February 13.
The demands are part of an effort to influence the direction
of national security and immigration policy, areas where deep divisions persist
between Democrats and Republicans. According to their position, public
resources must be accompanied by clear commitments that ensure oversight,
specific priorities, and limits on certain measures promoted by the
conservative majority.
The proposal anticipates tense negotiations on Capitol Hill,
where the risk of a partial government shutdown is once again on the table if
both sides fail to reach an agreement before the deadline. Meanwhile, DHS
funding has become a key issue in the broader political dispute over border
security, immigration, and federal spending.
