US President Donald Trump demanded that the state of
California return more than one billion dollars in federal funds that were
improperly used to finance healthcare for undocumented immigrants.
According to Trump, these resources should have been
allocated exclusively to US citizens or legal residents, and he characterized
the expenditure as a “violation of the rules governing the use of public
funds.”
The demand comes amid a national debate on immigration
policies and the use of federal resources by states governed by Democrats.
Trump accused Californian authorities of prioritizing people without legal
status in the country while neglecting the needs of US citizens. He also warned
that he would strengthen measures to prevent these types of programs from
continuing to operate with federal money.
For its part, the California government has defended these
policies, arguing that guaranteeing access to healthcare reduces health risks
and benefits the entire population, and that some programs are funded with
state resources, not exclusively federal ones.
However, the controversy could escalate into a far-reaching
legal and political conflict, in a context where immigration remains one of the
most sensitive issues on the American agenda, as citizens want their taxes to
benefit them and not those who remain in the country illegally.
