In a new move that has generated diplomatic tensions between Washington and several European countries, the United States government has doubled down on what it considers foreign attempts to interfere in digital public discourse.
The State Department announced that it has banned five
high-profile European officials and activists from entering the country,
accusing them of leading a coordinated strategy to pressure American technology
companies to restrict or censor the freedom of expression of American citizens
on digital platforms.
According to U.S. authorities, these individuals have
spearheaded campaigns and political efforts aimed at influencing the content moderation
policies of major technology companies, which, from Washington's perspective,
constitutes unacceptable interference with a right protected by the
Constitution.
The decision, according to the State Department itself,
seeks to send a clear message in defense of freedom of expression and U.S.
digital sovereignty, in a context of growing international debates on the
regulation of social media and the control of online content.
