A serious security scandal has rocked the US Secret Service
after it was revealed that an agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance's
protection detail allegedly shared confidential information with an undercover
journalist.
The agent in question is Tomás Escotto, an active-duty
officer and veteran of the Biden administration, who was secretly recorded
providing highly sensitive details about the vice president's security
operations. Among the information he allegedly disclosed were protection
formations, shift schedules, travel plans, routes, and real-time locations—data
that, had it fallen into the wrong hands, could have directly jeopardized the
safety of the vice president and his team.
In addition to the leak, the recordings reveal that Escotto
openly expressed personal political views, stating that he voted for Joe Biden
and expressing strong disdain for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and
the immigration policies associated with the Trump administration, even
declaring, “I hate that shit [ICE].” These statements have added a political
dimension to the case, although authorities have emphasized that the truly
serious issue is the violation of national security protocols.
After the material was made public, the Secret Service
decided to remove the agent from his duties, suspend his security clearance,
and block his access to official facilities and systems, while an internal
investigation is underway to determine the extent of the damage and any
potential administrative or criminal liabilities.
The case has generated serious concern within US security
circles, as it highlights the risks of internal threats and the importance of
maintaining strict discipline and confidentiality within the agencies
responsible for protecting the highest-ranking government officials. For now,
authorities have not ruled out more severe sanctions if it is confirmed that
the leak seriously compromised the vice president's security.
