Caracas Begins Prisoner Releases in Gesture Toward Washington Amid Key Negotiations

The Venezuelan government has begun releasing people considered political prisoners, a decision many observers interpret as a strategic move by the country's new leadership to respond to US pressure and facilitate broader negotiations between the two governments.

The releases come at a delicate time, as Caracas and Washington hold indirect talks on several sensitive issues, including the future of economic sanctions, Venezuela's role in the international oil market, and the status of foreign nationals detained in the South American country.

Although Venezuelan authorities have not released precise figures or complete lists of those released, civil society organizations and diplomatic sources indicate that this is the first group of releases, which could expand in the coming days if talks progress.

For the Venezuelan government, the gesture is intended to signal a willingness to engage in dialogue and improve its position at the negotiating table. For the United States, however, the release of detainees is seen as a key condition for any potential sanctions relief or energy agreement.

Analysts agree that this measure does not, for now, imply a profound change in Venezuela's internal political situation, but it does reflect an attempt to use humanitarian concerns as a bargaining chip in broader negotiations focused on economic and strategic interests.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations have called for the releases to be comprehensive and not selective, urging progress toward the release of all political prisoners and broader guarantees of respect for fundamental rights.
