Minnesota Governor Tim Walz authorized the deployment of the
state's National Guard to support local law enforcement in Minneapolis in
response to the deteriorating security situation caused by protests that, in
recent hours, have escalated into riots, clashes, and acts of violence.
The decision was made after authorities reported property
damage, road blockades, and clashes between protesters and police, amid a
climate of growing social tension that has put emergency services and law
enforcement agencies on high alert.
According to the state government, the National Guard's
mission will be to support crowd control efforts, protect critical
infrastructure, and restore order, without replacing local police, but
reinforcing their capacity to respond to the increase in violent incidents.
Governor Walz emphasized that the measure seeks to protect
both citizens and peaceful protesters, and prevent violent groups from
exploiting the demonstrations to generate chaos and destruction. However, the
military presence on the streets has generated concern among civil
organizations, which fear a further militarization of the response to social
protest.
Minneapolis has thus once again become the focus of national
attention, with a city marked by nights of unrest and a heavy security
presence, while calls for calm continue and the demands for justice that
sparked the protests persist.
