The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has called for new and
broader protests in Minneapolis, urging demonstrators to block streets and
paralyze the city's economy following the shooting death of Renee Good, a woman
who, according to official reports, allegedly attempted to run over a federal
agent during an operation.
Through messages shared on social media and during public
rallies, BLM activists urged the public to intensify the mobilizations and turn
them into a form of direct pressure against the authorities. “Shut these
streets again. Make the city pay again and again,” some of the organizers
proclaimed, alluding to the massive protests that followed the death of George
Floyd in 2020.
The movement's leaders emphasized that the economic impact
of those protests was one of the main factors that forced the authorities to
react, and they maintained that a similar strategy could bring about change
again. “They were worried about money when George Floyd died. We, as the
people, can make them lose even more money now,” they declared during their
calls to action.
The discourse was also marked by strong criticism of federal
immigration agencies, particularly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In slogans chanted by the protesters, some activists called this institution “a
demon” and asserted that “they are not human beings,” demonstrating the level
of anger and radicalization of the language used during the protests.
Local and federal authorities are maintaining a heavy
security presence at various points throughout the city amid fears that the
demonstrations could escalate into riots, prolonged blockades, or property
damage. At the same time, investigations have been launched to determine the exact
circumstances of the shooting that took the life of Renee Good.
Minneapolis, a city already a global symbol of violent
protests, has once again become the epicenter of a new wave of social tension,
with an increasingly polarized climate and open calls for civil disobedience
and economic shutdowns as a form of political pressure. These calls have been
met with widespread rejection from the vast majority of citizens, who are
urging the federal government, via social media, to put an end to these violent
protesters.
