More than £250 million could be awarded to those who claim
to have been harmed by AstraZeneca's Covid vaccine, according to court
documents.
According to DailyMail, 51 cases have been brought before
the High Court in London. Lawyers representing victims and families are suing
AstraZeneca under the Consumer Protection Act of 1987.
They argue that the vaccine was “a defective product” that
“was not as safe as consumers generally had a right to expect.” Families say
the AstraZeneca vaccine caused injuries and even deaths among their loved ones.
AstraZeneca has strongly denied these claims. The
pharmaceutical company admitted in a February legal filing that its vaccine can
cause “in very rare cases” a condition known as thrombocytopenia thrombosis
syndrome (TTS). The condition is also known as vaccine-induced immune
thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).
TTS can cause blood clots and a low blood platelet count
and, in some cases, has seriously harmed or even caused death in people who
received the AstraZeneca vaccine. The possibility of TTS has been flagged as a
possible side effect since the vaccine's rollout. But AstraZeneca's statement
in February was the first time the company admitted it in court, according to
The Telegraph.
