The U.S. Supreme Court could consider cases involving
several defendants in the Jan. 6 riots who were convicted and saddled with what
they consider excessively long sentences.
Edward Lang and Garrett Miller, both accused of entering the
Capitol on Jan. 6, asked the Supreme Court to dismiss an obstruction charge
against them ahead of their trials, the Daily Caller reported Wednesday.
They argue that prosecutors have extended an unrelated
statute to unfairly “overpenalize” people involved in the riots. If the Supreme
Court decides to hear his case, it could have far-reaching consequences for
many other Jan. 6 defendants facing charges under the same statute, the outlet
further noted.
