The United States reaffirmed on Thursday the "urgent
need" for a broad dialogue in Venezuela with a view to holding free and
fair elections, following a meeting between the undersecretary of state, Wendy
Sherman, with a delegate of the president in charge, Juan Guaidó.
Sherman and Julio Borges "emphasized the urgent need
for comprehensive and time-bound negotiations" in Venezuela, said State
Department spokesman Ned Price.
They indicated that these talks must "be conducted by
Venezuelans in order to restore democracy, human rights and the rule of law in
Venezuela through free and fair local, legislative and presidential
elections," he added.
