US President Donald Trump ordered the blocking of oil
tankers that, despite being sanctioned, continue to enter and leave Venezuela,
as part of a strategy to reinforce economic and diplomatic pressure against the
Venezuelan government.
The measure instructs US authorities to prevent operations,
transit, or logistical support for vessels included on sanctions lists, with
the aim of curbing crude oil exports and energy trade that, according to
Washington, helps sustain the Caracas regime. The order is part of a tightening
of existing restrictions on the Venezuelan oil sector.
US officials indicated that the blockade seeks to close
evasion routes used by companies and shipping lines to circumvent international
sanctions. So far, the operational scope and official reactions from the
Venezuelan government have not been specified, while analysts anticipate
possible additional tensions in the energy market and in the region's
diplomatic relations.
