Alan Simpson, former U.S. senator and one of Wyoming's most
influential Republican voices for decades, died at the age of 93, his family
announced in a joint statement with the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. He
passed away early Friday morning after a long recovery from a hip fracture
suffered last December.
Simpson, known for his political career and direct style in
public debate, represented Wyoming in the U.S. Senate and left a lasting mark
on the nation's political life. Before his legislative career, he also
distinguished himself as an athlete, playing for the state of Wyoming, a fact
he often spoke of with pride.
In recognition of his public service and contributions to
national civic life, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022, one
of the highest civilian honors in the United States. His passing marks the end
of a long life dedicated to public service, political dialogue, and the defense
of democratic institutions.
