The Donald Trump administration filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Boston and its top political leaders, marking another step in its national strategy to confront and weaken so-called "sanctuary city" policies. These measures, adopted by several cities across the United States, seek to limit cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration agencies, with the goal of protecting undocumented immigrants from immediate detention and deportation.

The federally sponsored lawsuit not only constituted a direct challenge to Boston's autonomy to define its own priorities regarding public safety and social coexistence, but was also part of a broader campaign the Trump administration has waged against similar jurisdictions across the country. Indeed, the lawsuit was interpreted as part of an attempt to exert political and legal pressure to force cities to collaborate more closely with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), under threat of sanctions or loss of federal funding.

This conflict reflected the deep tensions between local governments and the White House. While Boston defended its policy of providing a safe and inclusive environment for immigrant communities—arguing that this strengthened trust between residents and the police, favoring crime reporting and social cohesion—the Trump administration argued that sanctuary cities undermined the enforcement of federal immigration laws and jeopardized national security.

Politically, the lawsuit against Boston symbolized a key chapter in the ideological struggle between a restrictive and punitive vision of immigration, promoted from Washington, and a more protective and inclusive vision, upheld by local governments and civil society organizations. The case also became a benchmark in the multiple litigations that, during that period, defined the scope of the relationship between federal power and the autonomy of municipal and state authorities in the United States.
