The New York Times says the attack on the drug vessel represents a shift in Washington's strategy against drug trafficking

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States armed forces carried out a military operation against a speedboat that, according to official reports, was transporting narcotics in international waters. The attack resulted in the deaths of eleven alleged members of the Venezuelan cartel known as Tren de Aragua, a criminal organization that has expanded its influence across much of Latin America in recent years.

According to sources cited by The New York Times, this action represents a turning point in Washington's strategy against drug trafficking, as it is the first lethal operation targeting suspected traffickers on the high seas. Analysts believe the measure signals a tougher US anti-drug policy and could open a new chapter in the so-called "war on drugs," characterized by more direct and high-impact interventions.

During a press conference at the White House, Trump confirmed the operation, although he avoided providing details about the exact location of the attack or the specific involvement of the various branches of the armed forces. Later, through his social media platform, Truth Social, the former president released a statement in which he called the operation "a decisive success" and assured that his administration "will not tolerate foreign criminal organizations flooding the United States with deadly drugs."

The announcement generated immediate reactions in political and security circles. Some Republican lawmakers applauded the decision, considering it a message of firmness against transnational drug trafficking networks. However, international law and regional security specialists warned that such actions could strain diplomatic relations with countries in the region, particularly Venezuela, where the Aragua Train has its main operating bases.

It has not yet been clarified whether the attack was supported by international organizations or what implications it will have in terms of anti-drug cooperation with Latin American governments. However, the operation reinforces Trump's narrative of taking more forceful measures against criminal organizations that he considers a direct threat to U.S. national security.
