Vice President Kamala Harris is currently in the custody of
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers after President Donald Trump
ordered the removal of her official Secret Service protection, according to a
report released Wednesday.
According to FOX 11, up to 14 members of the LAPD's
Metropolitan Division have been reassigned from their regular duties—which
include ongoing investigations and organized crime operations—to provide
Harris's personal security in Los Angeles. This decision has reportedly raised
concerns among law enforcement officials due to work overload and the diversion
of resources from priority public safety tasks.
The move has been interpreted in political circles as
unusual, as former presidents, vice presidents, and their spouses traditionally
remain in Secret Service custody for years as part of national security
protocol. The replacement with personnel from a local police force not only
represents a drastic change in the protection arrangement, but also raises
questions about the motivations behind the decision and its potential
repercussions on Harris's public life.
Several analysts point out that the reassignment could
strain relations between local and federal authorities, in addition to exposing
Harris to greater risks, given that municipal police lack the intelligence
resources and interagency coordination that characterize the Secret Service. In
contrast, spokespersons close to the White House have avoided commenting on the
issue, while the LAPD has limited itself to confirming that it remains
"committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens, without exception."
The case adds to an already polarized political climate and
raises questions about the use of state security apparatus in a context of
partisan disputes.
