The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate voted 67 to 32 to
confirm Lori Chavez-DeRemer as President Donald Trump's Secretary of Labor.
Trump chose Chavez-DeRemer for the position because her
father was a member of the Teamsters union, a sign that Trump is seeking to
break the Democrats' longstanding alliance with unions.
Senators Tedd Budd (North Carolina), Rand Paul (Kentucky),
and former Republican leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) were the only
Republicans to speak out against Chavez-DeRemer's nomination. Seventeen
Democrats supported her, and Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) did not vote.
By a vote of 14 to 9, the Senate Health, Education, Labor,
and Pensions Committee agreed to nominate Chavez-DeRemer on February 27.
