Sanctions against Ortega approved in the US Senate

The Foreign Relations Committee of the United States Senate approved legislation on Tuesday to promote free elections in Nicaragua, with new measures to punish acts of corruption and human rights violations attributed to the Daniel Ortega regime.

The Law to Enforce Compliance with Conditions for Electoral Reform in Nicaragua (RENACER), presented at the end of March by Democrat Bob Menéndez and Republican Marco Rubio, will now be submitted to the full Senate for consideration.
