The conservative leader of Spain's Madrid region, who for
months defied the left-wing central government by keeping bars and shops open
during the COVID-19 pandemic, won the regional elections on Tuesday, an opinion
poll showed at the end of the vote.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, from the Popular Party (PP), will need
the support of one more party to continue governing the region, according to
the GAD3 survey of TVE and Telemadrid stations.
The official results will now begin to arrive and the
confirmation of the winner should arrive in the next few hours.
