Dr. Päivi Räsänen, a Christian senator from Finland, has
been charged with three counts of "incitement" against homosexuals
and faces two years in prison if convicted, according to a press release from
the National Prosecutor's Office, ChurchMilitant reported.
Räsänen, a physician, was Chairman of the Christian
Democratic Party from 2004 to 2015 and was Minister of the Interior of Finland
from 2011 to 2015.
Since 2019, Räsänen has been under investigation for social
media posts that questioned the Evangelical Lutheran Church's official
association with the Helsinki LGBT Pride case.
In April 2021, the Finnish Attorney General announced that
three separate charges of incitement against a minority had been brought
against Räsänen.
According to Attorney General Toiviainen, his comments are
"derogatory and discriminatory against homosexuals" and "can
fuel intolerance, contempt and hatred."
Räsänen used a screenshot of the biblical verse Romans 1:
24-27 in his messages, condemning homosexuality as a sin.
