The big consultancies are pessimistic about the recovery of
the tourism sector this year, while other experts argue that, although very
tight, it is still possible to save the summer campaign and attract around half
of the foreign visitors from other years (29 million in summer).
What everyone does agree on is the need to urgently
implement a Country Plan to promote Spain as a destination, to place it again
in a preferred place for international tourists, and in which this crisis will
promote structural changes in the sector , among them digitization.
Before this cataclysm, the sector was already facing an
uncertain outlook, mainly due to the slowdown in global growth and the effects
of Brexit, once the bankruptcy of the British operator Thomas Cook was overcome
last September, which was absorbed relatively quickly.
These factors, and the push from other destinations,
translated into decreases in tourist arrivals in 2019 both from the United
Kingdom and from Germany, France, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries,
although in absolute figures it again set a historical record, with 83 , 7
million tourists, because they offset the increases in the United States and
Asia. (EFE)
