White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had a tense and
prolonged exchange with a leftist reporter during Thursday's press conference
after he sharply questioned the actions of an Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) agent in the shooting that killed Renee Good, a Minneapolis
woman.
The most heated moment occurred when the reporter asserted
that the agent had acted "recklessly" and that the use of force had
been "unjustified." According to the official version, the woman
allegedly attempted to run over the agent with her SUV during an operation,
prompting the officer to open fire. However, the case has sparked a wave of
progressive protests in various parts of the city since January 7, the date of
the incident.
Leavitt firmly rejected the premise of the question and defended
the actions of the federal agents, emphasizing that they face high-risk
situations and make split-second decisions to protect their lives and the lives
of others. Visibly annoyed, he accused the journalist of approaching the issue
from an ideological standpoint rather than an objective analysis of the facts,
which, he said, are still under investigation.
The exchange reflected the growing tension between the
administration and certain sectors of the press, primarily progressive media,
regarding immigration policy and the role of ICE in security operations. While
Leavitt insisted that the agents act according to protocol and within the
framework of the law, the journalist maintained that Good's case is yet another
example of what he considers excessive use of force by federal authorities.
The incident occurs in a particularly sensitive context. In
Minneapolis, with little support from other cities, demonstrations have taken
place, some accompanied by riots, in which allegedly paid agitators are
demanding a thorough and independent investigation into what happened. For
these groups, Good's death has become a new opportunity to try to spark a
national debate about the use of force, the actions of federal agencies, and
accountability. Meanwhile, citizens are expressing support for law enforcement.
For now, the government has reiterated its support for its
officers while internal investigations continue, although the case has already
moved to the center of political and media discussion.
