Trump Issues Harsh Warning to Canada After Prime Minister's Speech at International Forum

US President Donald Trump publicly lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after the latter delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum, reigniting political and trade tensions between the two neighboring countries.

During a press conference with media and supporters, Trump reacted directly to the comments made by the Canadian leader the previous day at the international gathering, making clear his displeasure with the tone and content of the message. The US president bluntly stated that Canada reaps enormous benefits from its relationship with the United States, but that, in his view, it does not show the appreciation it deserves.

“Canada benefits tremendously from us,” Trump declared in a speech that stretched for several minutes, reverting to his confrontational style. “They should be grateful, but they’re not. I saw their prime minister yesterday, and he didn’t seem very grateful. Canada lives off the United States. Remember that, Mark, next time you make statements,” the president declared, in a message that quickly generated reactions in political and media circles.

The president’s words are interpreted as a further escalation of the nationalist and protectionist rhetoric that has characterized his foreign policy, especially regarding long-standing trading partners. Trump has repeatedly insisted that the United States bears a disproportionate share of the economic burden of its alliances and that several countries, including Canada, have benefited for years from agreements that, according to him, are unfair to his country.

Although specific details of Carney's speech that angered Trump were not released, the exchange reflects the tense atmosphere that persists in the bilateral relationship, marked by disagreements on trade, energy, and economic cooperation.

Analysts believe this latest episode could complicate diplomatic dialogue between the two governments, especially in an international context where the stability of regional alliances is key. So far, Ottawa has not issued an official response to the US president's remarks, although the issue is expected to generate reactions in the coming days, primarily because Carney has positioned himself as the stubborn figure clinging to a radical socialism that was born to be destroyed.
