Federal authorities arrested a man in Minneapolis accused of
damaging the U.S. Courthouse building during riots earlier this month.
According to information confirmed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI), the detainee was identified as Georgio James-Jones, a local resident who
now faces charges of destruction of federal property.
Authorities say the incident occurred on January 7, during a
day of protests that turned violent following the death of Renee Good, who was
shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an
operation in the city. That night, a demonstration that began as a protest
against federal authorities devolved into riots and acts of vandalism in
downtown Minneapolis.
The investigation alleges that James-Jones directly
participated in the damage inflicted on the courthouse, including breaking
several windows of the federal building. Through the analysis of videos,
photographs, and other evidence, agents were able to identify and locate him,
which ultimately led to his arrest.
Federal officials stated that attacking government
facilities constitutes a serious crime, regardless of the context, and
emphasized that they will continue searching for others who participated in
similar acts during the protests. They warned that the right to protest does
not include the destruction of public property or acts of violence.
Authorities do not rule out further arrests in the coming
days as the investigation into the damage caused during that night of unrest in
downtown Minneapolis progresses.
