Iran Maintains Contacts with the United States Amid an Unprecedented Internal Crisis Since 1979

The Iranian government stated that it continues to maintain open channels of communication with the United States at a time of heightened political and social tension, as President Donald Trump assesses how to respond to the harsh repression of the protests shaking the country.

The demonstrations, which have spread to various Iranian cities, represent one of the greatest challenges to the clerical regime since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which gave rise to the current political system. According to various sources, popular discontent has been fueled by a combination of economic, social, and political factors, as well as by rejection of the restrictions imposed by the government.

The response from Iranian authorities has been forceful and severe. Security forces have intervened to quell the protests, sparking a wave of international criticism and increasing diplomatic pressure on Tehran. In this context, the US administration is considering various options in response to what it views as a violation of human rights and excessive repression of the civilian population.

Despite the confrontational climate, Iran has stated that contacts with Washington are ongoing, suggesting that, at least diplomatically, both sides are seeking to avoid a further escalation of the conflict. However, the country's internal situation remains fragile, and the outcome of this crisis could have profound repercussions for both Iranian domestic politics and the geopolitical balance of the region.
