Trump and Lula hold "cordial and productive" conversation on bilateral trade and future cooperation

US President Donald Trump reported this Monday that he had a "positive and constructive" telephone conversation with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in which the two leaders discussed key issues on the economic and diplomatic agenda between the two nations.

According to a statement released by the White House, the call lasted approximately 30 minutes and was conducted in a respectful and cordial tone. During the conversation, President Lula da Silva expressed his interest in strengthening trade ties with the United States and requested a review of tariff measures affecting Brazilian products, particularly the 40% tax applied to certain exports to the US market.

In addition to trade issues, the Brazilian president raised the possibility of easing restrictions imposed by Washington on some local governments, with the goal of encouraging direct cooperation in areas such as energy, agricultural technology, and sustainable development. According to diplomatic sources, Lula emphasized the importance of promoting more equitable economic exchange, less conditioned by protectionist measures.

For his part, President Trump highlighted recent progress in bilateral relations and reiterated his willingness to explore mechanisms that promote economic growth and stability in the region. In subsequent statements to the press, Trump described the conversation as "very good" and asserted that both governments share "a common vision on the need to promote fair trade and opportunities for both peoples."

Both the White House and the Planalto Palace agreed that communication between the two leaders was "cordial and productive." The diplomatic teams of both countries pledged to maintain an open channel of dialogue in the coming weeks to prepare for a possible in-person meeting between Trump and Lula, which is scheduled to take place "soon," according to official sources.

International analysts have interpreted the call as an attempt to revive ties between two of the continent's largest economies, following a period of tension stemming from US trade policies. Experts point out that the elimination or reduction of the tax on Brazilian exports could represent a key gesture of rapprochement by Washington, especially in a global context marked by economic competition and the need to strengthen strategic alliances in Latin America.
