Washington, D.C. – A new confrontation between President
Donald Trump's administration and state Democratic officials escalated Monday
after federal judge April Perry, appointed in 2022 by former President Joe Biden,
gave the federal government 48 hours to explain the legality of the deployment
of National Guard troops in Chicago, Illinois.
The court action follows an emergency lawsuit filed by the
Illinois state government and local Chicago officials seeking to block the
deployment of federalized National Guard units, arguing that the action
constitutes an unconstitutional intervention in state affairs.
According to the document issued by Judge Perry, the Trump
administration must submit its justification by midnight Wednesday, while a
full hearing will be held Thursday afternoon in the Northern District of
Illinois.
The judge emphasized that the preliminary ruling seeks to
ensure a balance between federal authority and state autonomy rights, a
historically sensitive issue in the relationship between Washington and local
governments.
"The court requires the Executive Branch to detail the
legal grounds and conditions of necessity that motivated the deployment of the
National Guard to state territory without a formal request from the
governor," the order states.
