Washington, D.C. – Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
(AOC), a New York Democrat and one of the most influential figures in the
progressive wing of the Democratic Party, sparked controversy by publicly
mocking Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, calling him a
“clown” during a live broadcast on social media.
In a video broadcast on Instagram Live to her more than 13
million followers, Ocasio-Cortez mocked what she described as the “insecure
masculinity” of several men within President Donald Trump’s administration,
noting that humor can become a powerful political tool in the face of what she
considers authoritarian and misogynistic behavior from those in power.
“There's nothing that scares authoritarians more than
laughter. When people laugh at them, they lose the control they seek to impose.
So please laugh. Laugh at their speeches, their posturing, and their fragile
masculinity,” the New York congresswoman said, sparking a wave of both
supportive and negative reactions on social media.
During the broadcast, AOC directly alluded to Stephen
Miller, one of the Trump administration's leading immigration policy
strategists, accusing him of promoting “a xenophobic and repressive agenda
disguised as patriotism.”
“It's incredible that a man who spent years separating
migrant families has the audacity to talk about morals or values. He's a
political clown, and we shouldn't take him seriously,” she added.
This comes at a time when the representative is receiving
disapproval from citizens who had previously identified with the Democratic Party
but now describe themselves as disillusioned.
