The Trump administration announced the launch of a comprehensive
review of the U.S. public housing system with the goal of identifying and
removing residents who are in the country illegally. The announcement was made
by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, who explained that the
measure seeks to "ensure that federal resources are allocated only to
citizens and legal residents who meet the requirements established by
law."
According to the directive, each public housing authority in
the country will have 30 days to conduct an internal audit to verify compliance
with current regulations. This involves collecting and submitting detailed
information on the housing units and confirming the citizenship or eligible
immigration status of current residents.
The plan is part of a broader strategy by the Trump
administration to tighten immigration policies, arguing that the occupation of
subsidized housing by undocumented individuals displaces U.S. citizens and
legal residents on waiting lists.
Turner's order puts pressure on local public housing
agencies, which must balance strict compliance with federal regulations with
serving thousands of low-income families who depend on these types of programs
for their livelihoods.
