WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has
instructed his staff to identify current and former military personnel, or
anyone associated with the Pentagon, who has made comments mocking or seemingly
condoning the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The order,
revealed by NBC News through two defense officials, seeks to impose
disciplinary sanctions and strengthen internal discipline within the Armed
Forces.
According to the sources, Hegseth considered it
“unacceptable” for members of the armed forces to make statements that could be
interpreted as supporting or justifying a violent crime, especially in the case
of an event that has shocked the country's political and social sphere. “We
will not tolerate conduct that calls into question the honor, impartiality, and
commitment to the Constitution of those who serve in our ranks,” he stated in
an internal communication.
Department of Defense sources specified that the
investigation will encompass both social media posts and public statements, and
that sanctions could range from administrative measures to legal action,
depending on the severity of the conduct detected.
Civil rights organizations have expressed concern about the
scope of the measure, warning that it could conflict with the freedom of
expression of off-duty military personnel. However, security analysts point out
that the Armed Forces' code of conduct establishes clear limits to prevent
expressions that call into question the institution's political neutrality.
With Hegseth's order, the Department of Defense seeks to
send a signal of zero tolerance for any form of justification of violence, in
order to preserve the credibility and cohesion of the armed forces in a highly
polarized political context.
