In an event that shocked the American political world, Charlie Kirk, co-founder and executive director of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, died this Wednesday afternoon after being shot. The news was confirmed by President Donald Trump through his social media account, Truth Social, where he expressed his grief and highlighted the legacy of one of the most influential activists of the American right in the last decade.
“The great, and even legendary, Charlie Kirk has passed
away. No one understood or had the hearts of the youth of America better than
Charlie. He was loved and admired by all, especially by me, and now he is no
longer with us. Melania and my deepest condolences to his beautiful wife Erika
and their family. Charlie, we love you!” Trump wrote in a message that quickly
went viral and generated thousands of reactions across the country.
At just 30 years old, Kirk had become one of the most
powerful voices within the American conservative movement. He founded Turning
Point USA in 2012, an organization that mobilized thousands of young college
students around causes such as the defense of the free market, American
nationalism, and opposition to what he considered "progressive
hegemony" in educational institutions.
His combative style, his viral speeches on college campuses,
and his closeness to high-profile Republican figures—including Trump
himself—made him a figurehead of the new populist right in the United States.
In Congress, the news generated mixed responses. Republican
lawmakers deeply mourned Kirk's death, describing him as a
"visionary" and an "inspirational leader for new
generations." Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene asserted that the loss
"leaves a void that cannot be filled in the fight to save America's
values."
Meanwhile, some Democratic members of Congress, while
critical of his rhetoric, expressed their condolences to the family and
rejected violence as a political tool. "Our ideological differences are
great, but no one deserves to be the victim of such an atrocious act," declared
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
