House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed Wednesday that President
Donald Trump's push to organize a midterm Republican Party convention could
become a half-true reality in the coming months.
During a press conference at the Capitol, the Louisiana
lawmaker recounted that Trump recently contacted him while he was traveling to
share what he described as an innovative proposal. "The president called
me, I think it was last week, just as the topic was starting to appear in the
media. He said, 'Mike, I have a great idea... how would you like a midterm
convention?'" Johnson recalled.
The congressman did not hesitate to publicly support the suggestion,
calling it a "brilliant" initiative that could strengthen party unity
and reinvigorate the Republican base ahead of the upcoming elections.
Although logistical details about the potential
convention—such as the date, location, or format—have not yet been released,
the proposal is already generating excitement within Republican ranks. For some
analysts, a meeting of this type in the midst of the midterm period would aim
to demonstrate political strength, reinforce Trump's narrative as a central figure
of the conservative movement, and set the party's course for the upcoming
electoral challenges.
If it materializes, it would be the first time the
Republican Party has organized an event of such magnitude in the middle of a
legislative cycle, which would represent an unprecedented political experiment
in contemporary Republican strategy.
