House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his support for
President Donald Trump's proposal to hold a Republican National Convention
resembling a presidential convention before the 2026 midterm elections.
In an interview with Fox News, Johnson said Trump contacted
him directly to share the idea, which he presented as a strategy to
"inject energy and enthusiasm" into the conservative electorate in a
crucial year for the future of Congress. According to Johnson, the goal would
be to strengthen party unity and ensure Republicans maintain control of both
the House of Representatives and the Senate.
According to the legislator, the proposal calls for a
large-scale event, with speeches, forums, and the presence of key Republican
Party leaders, in a format that would evoke the magnitude of the presidential
conventions that traditionally mark the start of general campaigns. “President
Trump wants us to show cohesion, vision, and political strength against the
Democrats, and a national convention before the midterms could be the way to
achieve that,” Johnson said.
The initiative comes amid growing political tension in
Washington, where Republicans are seeking to capitalize on the momentum
generated by Trump ahead of the upcoming elections. Analysts emphasize that an
event of this magnitude could serve both to mobilize the conservative base and
to project the party as a disciplined force prepared to regain ground in
battleground states.
However, critics warn that such a move could also exacerbate
political polarization by turning the midterm elections into an early
plebiscite on Trump's influence within the party and the country. Furthermore,
the cost and logistics of a convention of this magnitude before the midterm
elections raise questions about the practical viability of the proposal.
For now, Johnson insisted that the idea reflects Trump's
desire to continue playing a leading role in shaping the Republican direction:
"We're talking about a leader who knows how to inspire millions of voters.
This convention could make a difference in 2026."
