Conservative podcaster and influencer Candace Owens
responded last week to a query from the UK's Daily Mail about whether she would
attend the funeral of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, held on Sunday.
The response generated excitement due to Owens' long-standing closeness with
the activist, with whom she shared stages and political causes in defense of
youth conservatism in the United States.
However, her name was conspicuously absent from the official
speaker list for the tribute, which did include prominent figures in the
conservative movement, including his widow Erika Kirk, President Donald Trump,
and commentator Tucker Carlson, among others. The exclusion of Owens, who was
once considered one of Kirk's closest allies, caught the attention of media and
supporters who had hoped to see her play a more prominent role in the tribute.
Although it has not been clarified whether her absence as a
speaker was due to a personal decision or the organization of the event, the
situation has revived speculation about a rift between Owens and some sectors
of the conservative leadership. In recent months, the commentator has been at
the center of public controversies and tensions within the movement itself,
which could have influenced the design of the memorial program.
Owens, for her part, avoided confrontational statements and
limited herself to expressing respect for the time of mourning experienced by
Kirk's family and followers. Her brief and measured statement was interpreted
by some analysts as an attempt to prevent her absence from becoming a media
distraction from the activist's legacy.
