A British couple who had been detained in Afghanistan was
released this Thursday, a local official confirmed. Although Afghan authorities
did not specify the reasons for their detention or the exact length of time
they were held in custody, it was reported that both citizens were in Kabul
when they were arrested.
British diplomatic sources indicated that the released
couple are already in contact with consular representatives and that their
health is stable. The British government declined to provide further details
about the couple's identity, but assured them that it will continue to work
with Afghan authorities to clarify the events.
The release comes amid heightened tensions between
Afghanistan and Western countries following the Taliban's return to power in
2021, which has led to frequent detentions of foreigners suspected of violating
local regulations or engaging in activities deemed "illegal" by the
regime.
So far, it has not been clarified whether the couple will
face restrictions on leaving the country or whether they will be able to return
immediately to the United Kingdom.
