Sheriff Chad Bianco of Riverside, California, said in a
video: "Great news! #AB1333 has been dismissed! Thanks to everyone who
spoke out about this bill, its author has decided to kill his own
legislation."
AB 1333 was a California Assembly bill that would have
restricted the right to self-defense. The bill was withdrawn due to misleading
information.
What was the purpose of AB 1333?
Its author, Rick Chavez Zbur, stated that his goal was to
close a loophole that could allow armed assailants to kill victims and evade
accountability.
The bill would have made it more difficult to use deadly
force, especially in cases of self-defense in homes or to protect property.
It would have made it difficult for law enforcement to
determine whether self-defense was justified.
What were the concerns about AB 1333?
It could have restricted citizens' ability to defend
themselves against violent criminals. It could have weakened the Castle
Doctrine and the Stand Your Ground laws, which allow people to defend themselves
in their homes without having to retreat.
It could have discouraged people from defending themselves
in life-threatening situations.
Therefore, Bianco said, "This is a huge victory for all
Californians and a major step forward in restoring common sense and sanity to
our state government. Let's keep moving forward!"
