The California legislature passed a bill last Friday that
would threaten parents with losing custody of their children if they questioned
their children's alleged desire to undergo disfiguring hormonal regimens or
surgeries to look more like the opposite sex.
Assembly Bill 957 was initially proposed to require courts
to consider whether parents were “affirming” a child's identification as
transgender in custody cases, The Federalist reported.
The legislation was later amended in June to hold parents
who are not considered sufficiently “affirming” liable for child abuse.
Republican state Sen. Scott Wilk bluntly recommended that
parents “flee” the state over the amendment.
“In the past, when we had these discussions and I saw an
atrophy of parental rights, I encouraged people to keep fighting,” Wilk said in
June. "I changed my mind about it," Wilk added. “If you love your
children, you should flee California. You need to run away.”
