The European Union will suspend development aid payments to
Afghanistan now that the Taliban have taken power, but it is studying a
possible increase in humanitarian aid.
EU foreign policy commissioner Josep Borrell said
"there can be no development aid payments until we clarify the
situation" with the Taliban chiefs.
Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Borrell
said the Taliban must abide by UN Security Council resolutions and human rights
to access the funds.
Borrell said that "humanitarian aid will continue and
perhaps we will increase it," given the number of displaced people, the
persistent drought and the impact of the coronavirus.
