The Prime Minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph, declared a
"state of siege" on Wednesday, which gives greater powers to the
Executive, a few hours after the assassination of the president, Jovenel Moise,
at his home.
"In strict application of article 149 of the
Constitution, I have just presided over an Extraordinary Council of ministers
and we have decided to declare a state of siege throughout the country,"
Joseph announced in a speech posted on social media.
"They shot and killed the president and wounded his
wife," said the prime minister, who assured that this death "will not
go unpunished."
