New home sales plummet in US in June

WASHINGTON- New home sales in the United States fell sharply in June to the surprise of analysts, according to data released Monday by the Commerce Department.

Last month, 676,000 new homes were sold at an annual rate (sales in 12 months if this rate were maintained), which means a 6.6% drop compared to May, the result of which was adjusted downward. Analysts had expected a rise to 790,000.

The precipitous drop in new home sales is the second of that magnitude in 2021 and puts a market on alert that remained a pillar of the US economy during the pandemic.
