Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., is quietly considering a fast-track budget maneuver to legalize millions of illegal immigrants if bipartisan talks about providing a path to citizenship fail, The New York reported. Times.
The strategy is part of a backup plan that Schumer has
prepared if talks between 15 senators from both parties fail to reach a
compromise on immigration.
As negotiations drag on with little agreement in sight,
advocates on the left are increasingly concerned that Democrats will squander a
rare opportunity to legalize wide swaths of the undocumented population while
their party controls the houses of Congress and the White House.
Schumer has privately told members of the Congressional
Hispanic Caucus in recent weeks that he is "actively exploring"
whether it would be possible to attach a comprehensive immigration review to
President Joe Biden's infrastructure plan and put it through a process known as
budget reconciliation, according to two people briefed on their comments, the
Times reported.
"Democrats must act," says Sergio Gonzales,
director of the Immigration Hub, which is pushing a pro-immigrant agenda in
Congress. "Now is the time. This year is the time. We must have
citizenship this year."
