Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill Monday to
limit absentee voting, shorten early voting and close the polls earlier on
Election Day.
The law had been passed in both houses of the legislature
and widely endorsed by Republicans, now it has the governor's signature for
immediate implementation. The new provision seeks to generate a fairer
electoral system and free from speculation about fraud.
From now on, Iowa will shorten the early voting period
within the state from 29 to 20 days. It will also require that the majority of
vote-by-mail ballots be received before Election Day. Polling places must close
at 8 pm, one hour earlier than before by law.
Also now, county auditors or other election officials are
prohibited from submitting unsolicited absentee ballot request forms. And they
will face fines of up to $ 10,000 if they fail to enforce state election laws
or disobey secretary of state guidelines.
County auditors will be strictly prohibited from
establishing satellite voting sites unless enough residents request one. Voters
will be removed from active voter rolls if they miss an election and do not
report an address change or register to vote again.
