Two of London's famous red telephone boxes have been reborn
as a coffee stand, and their owners say the lack of interior space, which was
inconvenient when they opened a week before confinement, could now be an asset
to a capital that seeks social distancing.
The couple Loreinis Hernández and Sean Rafferty said that
the Café Amar, which operates in two adjacent disused telephone booths in West
London, began operating just a week before the city was paralyzed in late March
due to the pandemic of COVID-19.
"We were so excited to start this business ... and then
the confinement came," said Hernandez. "We close for six weeks."
The relaxation of restrictions this week has encouraged them
to reopen this particular cafeteria, specializing in coffee from Hernández's
native Colombia.
"We invested everything in these cabins before
confinement," said Rafferty.
"We always thought it was going to be coffee to go, and
maybe now it's even better because people prefer to be outside, sitting in the
park."
Although the stocks they currently have are sufficient for
at least a few weeks, Rafferty and Hernández hope that confinement in the South
American country will not prevent future deliveries.
