PAIN IN LATIN AMERICA: Unemployment rate in Argentina rises to 10.4% year-on-year in the first quarter, while GDP falls 5.4%

Argentina's unemployment rate rose to 10.4% in the first quarter of 2020 from 10.1% registered in the same period of the previous year, the official statistical agency, Indec, reported on Tuesday.

The measurement took into account part of the quarantine that the Government established as of March 20 to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

For its part, the unemployment rate increased mainly among those who had a previous occupation and, in terms of search time, especially those who have been looking for a job for 3 to 6 months grew, said Indec.

The entity added that the activity rate in the first quarter of 2020 stood at 47.1% and the employment rate was 42.2% in the same period.

Argentina's GDP falls 5.4% in the first quarter
Argentina's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted 5.4% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period the previous year, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) said on Tuesday.
