"We assume the girl is dead," said Braunschweig
State Attorney Hans Christian Wolters. "The Braunschweig district attorney
is investigating a 43-year-old German suspected of murder."
This German citizen, who was not publicly identified, lived
in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007 and was engaged in robbery in hotels and
holiday apartments, as well as drug trafficking, according to German police. He
is currently detained for another matter.
British and German police have previously said the man has
already been convicted numerous times for sexual abuse of minors in the past.
They also noted that they were treating the case as an
alleged murder and that they had identified the method used to kill McCann,
although it was not clear how they had done so. No body has ever been found.
"All we have always wanted is to find her, discover the
truth and bring those responsible to justice," said the girl's parents,
Kate and Gerry, in a statement before the German prosecutor's statements.
"We will never lose hope of finding Madeleine alive,
but whatever the outcome, we need to know to find peace."
Police said they wanted to speak to a second, unidentified
person who spoke to the German suspect from a Portuguese phone number on May 3,
2007 at the time of McCann's disappearance.( Reuters)
