The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported the
arrest of an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record and alleged ties to
the Latin Kings gang, accused of offering money in exchange for the
assassination of Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino. Authorities describe the
case as a direct threat against a high-ranking federal official.
According to official information, the plot came to light
when a confidential source alerted authorities on October 3, 2025, about a
reward offer for an attack against Bovino. Following this tip, Homeland
Security Investigations (HSI), a unit of Immigration and Customs Enforcement
(ICE), launched an operation to identify the person responsible.
The investigation led agents to Juan Espinoza Martínez, who
was arrested on October 6 in Burr Ridge, Illinois. According to authorities,
the suspect not only disseminated the offer but also attempted to gather
information about the official's location, raising the alert level among
federal agencies.
The government believes this case highlights the level of
risk faced by immigration enforcement officials, especially in a context of
increasing tension with organized crime groups. For the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS), the arrest prevented a potential attack and sends a clear
message that threats against public servants will be prosecuted to the fullest
extent of the law.
The accused will now face federal charges as the case
proceeds through the courts. Authorities have reiterated that they will
continue to strengthen the protection of their senior officials and agents
involved in sensitive operations nationwide.
