US President Donald Trump announced that, effective February
1, all federal aid and resources to so-called “sanctuary cities” and the states
that host them will be suspended. According to his statements, this decision
stems from his opinion that these jurisdictions have adopted policies that, far
from protecting the population, end up benefiting people who have committed
crimes.
Trump argued that these cities are doing everything possible
to protect criminals, even at the expense of the safety of American citizens.
According to the president, this situation not only jeopardizes public order
but also fosters fraud and increases crime rates.
In this context, the federal government considers it
necessary to withdraw funding as a pressure tactic to force local authorities
to modify their policies and cooperate more actively with federal laws on
security and immigration.
The president's stance reflects a broader strategy aimed at
strengthening enforcement measures and strengthening law enforcement,
especially on issues related to immigration and homeland security, seeking to
prioritize the protection of citizens and respect for the existing legal
framework.
