The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Kenia López Rabadán, affirmed that the responsibility for confronting organized crime in Mexico rests exclusively with the Mexican State and its institutions, and not with foreign governments, after US President Donald Trump warned that he could launch ground operations against drug cartels on Mexican territory.
The legislator emphasized that, although combating crime is
a shared priority for both countries, national sovereignty is not up for
negotiation and must be respected at all times. In that regard, she maintained
that any security strategy must originate from the Mexican government itself
and be implemented within the country's constitutional and legal framework.
López Rabadán's statements come amid intense public debate,
as some citizens on social media have expressed support for the US president's
intentions, believing his stance could "bring order" to the violence
plaguing large parts of the country. However, the congresswoman cautioned that
social desperation cannot justify the intervention of foreign forces on Mexican
soil.
Nevertheless, she emphasized that the federal government has
an obligation to demonstrate through concrete actions that it is effectively
confronting criminal groups, which remain responsible for a serious security
crisis impacting millions of families.
Furthermore, López Rabadán acknowledged that security is not
only an internal matter, but also directly influences the bilateral
relationship with the United States and Canada, as well as the stability and
validity of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is
fundamental to the national economy.
The congresswoman concluded that Mexico must reaffirm its
sovereignty and, at the same time, strengthen its security strategy, not only
to restore peace in the country, but also to maintain a solid and respectful
relationship with its trade and political partners in North America.
