Garfield, New Jersey – In an unexpected political turn,
Everett E. Garnto Jr., mayor of Bergen County—the state's fifth-largest
municipality—announced Thursday his departure from the Democratic Party and his
endorsement of the Republican party led by gubernatorial candidate Jack
Ciattarelli.
The announcement was made during a rally at the Garfield
municipal gymnasium, attended by hundreds of supporters. In his speech, Garnto
stated that his decision reflects a deep dissatisfaction with the state's
current direction. “New Jersey is broken, and it's time to work on real
solutions,” the mayor said, receiving applause from the crowd.
Garnto's endorsement represents a symbolic victory for
Ciattarelli, who is seeking to expand his electoral base in a state
traditionally dominated by Democrats. During the event, the Republican welcomed
the mayor's decision and stated that his campaign will focus on combating
corruption, reducing taxes, and improving public safety.
Political analysts point out that this party change could
have an impact on the race, given that Bergen is one of the most heavily
weighted electoral regions in New Jersey. Although Democrats maintain an
advantage in the polls, Garnto's move reflects growing discontent among local
communities with the current state administration.
"Mayor Garnto joins thousands of citizens who are ready
for change," Ciattarelli emphasized, stressing that his campaign seeks to
unite communities tired of broken promises.
With this announcement, the battle for New Jersey's
governorship intensifies, and the role of local leaders like Garnto could be
decisive in shaping the vote.
