President Donald Trump won a resounding victory at the
Supreme Court, which upheld his decision to end legal protections granted to
hundreds of thousands of migrants in the country. The ruling even had the
support of judges traditionally identified with the court's liberal wing,
reinforcing the ruling's political reach.
With this decision, the Court lifted a lower court
injunction that prevented the president from revoking the protected legal
status granted to migrants of various nationalities, many of whom have resided
in the United States for decades under programs such as Temporary Protected
Status (TPS).
The Trump administration argued that these measures were
temporary and had been extended without justification by previous
administrations, while civil society organizations and immigrant rights
advocates warned that the decision will leave entire families in uncertainty,
with thousands of workers and students at risk of deportation.
Although the White House celebrated the resolution as a
triumph of its immigration policy, the debate surrounding the legality and
humanitarian dimension of this measure promises to intensify in Congress and
state courts, where new legal challenges could still arise.
